CPR Program

As a part of our mission to educate the public, and with the support of grants from Strowd Roses Inc and public donations, South Orange Rescue Squad offers free CPR and AED (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator) classes to individuals and groups within Orange County, North Carolina.

Classes:

Our volunteer American Heart Association (AHA) Instructors teach Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider, Heartsaver CPR certification classes for those who need a certification for work or volunteering, and CPR for Family and Friends. We also offer American Heart Association First Aid classes as requested. Free CPR and First Aid classes open to the general public are offered on the second Saturday of each month.

Which CPR class should I take?

CPR for Family and Friends

CPR for Family and Friends is for people who want to learn life-saving skills but don’t need a CPR certification card. This course is ideal for children, new parents, grandparents, and anyone who would like to learn the basics of CPR.

Heart Saver/AED CPR

The Heartsaver/AED course is designed for individuals who need to be CPR certified for their job but are not healthcare providers. The HS/AED course is meant for individuals who need to call 911 in the event of an emergency.

CPR for Healthcare Providers

CPR for HCP covers 1-rescuer and 2-rescuer CPR and AHA guidelines for the use of medical equipment (advanced airways and bag-valve-masks). Healthcare providers (EMT, firefighter, nurses, CNAs) are professionals that provide advanced care to patients in a clinical setting. Students who complete this course receive a Healthcare Provider CPR certification card.

For Individuals:

Through a partnership with the Town of Chapel Hill’s Parks and Recreation Department, SORS offers free monthly CPR and AED classes open to all individuals. To check our schedule of upcoming classes and to register for a CPR or First Aid class with SORS, please visit:

www.townofchapelhill.org/register

Click the Town of Chapel Hill link above. Click the ‘Special Interests’ link on the right side of the screen. Available CPR/First Aid classes are listed on this page. Classes are updated quarterly on the Town of Chapel Hill website. Please continuously check for updated class listings.

There is occasionally space available in group CPR/First Aid classes for individuals if Town of Chapel Hill classes are full. If you would like to participate in a group CPR class, please contact us with your request and availability at cpr@sors.us.

For Groups:

Please email cpr@sors.us and give us a few potential dates that work for your group. Because we are an all-volunteer organization and many of us have full-time jobs, we are best able to accommodate classes on evenings and weekends. Instructor availability is limited for weekday classes.

We are able to accommodate classes at your location if your facility has enough space to practice CPR skills on the floor. SORS requires a way to show our instructional videos such as a TV with good speakers and DVD player, a projector, and speakers. We can also host classes at our station in Carrboro (202 Roberson St., Carrboro, NC 27510).

When Attending Classes:

There are no fees for this course and you do not need to bring anything. Everything you need will be provided.  There is a practical component to this course, so please wear comfortable clothing. Part of the practical portion will involve practicing compressions with a manikin placed on the floor. If you are unable to practice compressions on the floor for any reason, we will be more than happy to make accommodations for you.  If you have any question or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the CPR program (see below). We look forward to seeing you at your South Orange Rescue Squad CPR course.
